    Obituary

HOLSTEIN, Iowa -- Herbert E. Goettsch, 89, of Holstein passed away Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein, with the Rev Curtis E. Benson officiating. Burial will be in Holstein Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home in Holstein.

Herb was born Oct. 11, 1921, to Theodore and Lillian (Holst) Goettsch, in Douglas Township, Ida County, Iowa. His father died when he was seven. He was raised by his uncle, Alfred Holst, and aunt, Ella Holst. He attended Cushing (Iowa) Consolidated School and graduated with the high school class of 1939.

He married Myrtle Anna Dau on Feb. 27, 1945, at the Holstein Lutheran church parsonage. To this union two sons were born, Gerald Herbert and James David. The family were dedicated members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Holstein. Herb, in his younger years, was very active in his church and served on the church council. He was a farmer in Douglas Township, Ida County, until his retirement in 1982, when they moved into their new home on the Holstein Golf Course.

Herb had a love for life and had many interests. He played his accordion and sang for many years at chivaris and other gatherings. He enjoyed bowling before his retirement and went to many national tournaments. Golf was a sport he really enjoyed and worked hard at getting a golf course built in Holstein. He served on the Country Club board for many years.

He had a great love for music and spent many hours working with his music equipment. After his retirement, he taught himself to play the organ. It was not unusual to come into their home and find him singing and playing the organ. He was a perfectionist at playing pool and he and his pool buddies had regular meeting times when they would enjoy a tough game of pool in their own private homes. He and Myrt spent many years traveling stateside and abroad. He was definitely a people person.

In later years as his health began to fail, it was hard for him to give up the hobbies he enjoyed. He tried to the very end to be as active as possible. It was difficult for him to see others do his yard work and pick the cherries from the tree in his back yard. He enjoyed the grandchildren and their activities until just a few months ago.

His survivors are his wife, Myrtle "Myrt"; son, Dr. Gerald (Roletta Albers) Goettsch of Bettendorf, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Patricia (Shelton) Goettsch of Hubbard, Ohio; five grandchildren, Barry (Dr. Eva) Goettsch of Hawarden, Iowa, Nichelle (Elliott) Schiffman of Glenview, Ill., Brandi (Matthew) Pavone of Boardman, Ohio, Ryan Goettsch and David Goettsch of Hubbard, Ohio; and five great-grandchildren, Bennett and Abigail Goettsch, Zachary and Madelyn Schiffman, and Jemma Pavone. 820. Melvin Jeryl 8 Gotch (Adolph7, Claus Hinrich6 Gotsch, Clas5, Clas4, Peter3 Götsch, Clas (Twin)2 Gotsche, Peter1 Gotsch) was born December 5, 1932 in Jamestown-Shelley, Idaho. Melvin Jeryl died February 23, 2015 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, at 82 years of age.

    Obituary

    February 23, 2015

    M. Jeryl Gotch, 82, of Ammon and former Shelley resident passed away February 23, 2015 at Life Care Center in Idaho Falls.

He was born December 5, 1932 in Jamestown, Idaho to Adolph Gotch and Eva Arave Gotch.

He married Mary Hjelm, in Shelley, October 13, 1956.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Jeryl worked for Simplot, RT French's Co. and Pillsbury for 38 years as a plant supervisor. He has many friends still working at the plant in Shelley.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Gotch, his children, Bee Ramos (Mondo) of Shelley, Mark Gotch (Penny) of Shelley, his grandchildren, Tyler Olsen (Heather) of Shelley, Jared Olsen (Timanee) of Idaho Falls, Kaitlin Gotch of Corbin, KY, Kristin Gotch (Todd) of Spokane, WA, his six great-grandchildren, and his two brothers, Noel Gotch of Shelley and Neldon Gotch of Jamestown. He was preceded in death by his mother, his father, four sisters, and two brothers.

Jeryl loved to travel. When he was healthy, he would take his grandchildren on summer road trips in his Buick Park Avenue, to California, Disneyland, or Washington. He introduced them to the open deserts of Utah and Nevada, to eclectic truck stop restaurants and diners places with the best pancakes, the best biscuits and gravy. He appreciated the scenery just as much as the people he would find along the way, those he'd stop to talk to about the weather, about a baseball score, about anything. He was friendly, easy-going. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

If you knew Jeryl Gotch, you know he loved baseball, especially the New York Yankees. He played left-field and catcher on the RT French's softball team. He loved to fish from riverbanks and lakeshores, despite his unyielding fear of water. When he was younger, he rode horses in the foothills near Jamestown. The image is as clear as a scene from one of the John Wayne movies he loved. He was a kind of John Wayne tall, a bit surly at times. He was strong, determined. He was a man we loved a man who loved us, his family, above all else.

Omaha World Herald November 14, 1965: Patrol Says Nurse Saved Driver's Life on Highway

Silver Creek, Neb. (UPI) --- A Columbus nurse has been credited with saving a man's life following an accident near here. Injured were two Colorado truckers, one critically.

According to the State Safety Patrol, the driver of the cattle truck traveling east Thursday on U.S. 30 was Jimmy J. Justice, 35, of Rifle, Colo. He apparently lost control of his truck after meeting a pickup truck, which was pulling a hay wagon. Mr. Justice said the hay load was weaving across the centerline and he was forced to leave the road, overturning in a field.

The driver of the pickup was Ralph Hasselbach, 55, of Osceola. Mr. Justice received a seven-inch cut across the neck, severing his jugular vein. He also received severe facial lacerations and a shoulder injury. Relief driver Robert L. Geahart, 28, Palasade, Colo., who was sleeping in the truck, received facial cuts and bruises.

Betty Hann, a registered nurse employed at the Columbus Medical Center, came on the scene a short time later. She applied a compress to the neck wound and held it tightly while the other truck driver helped her place Mr. Justice in her car. The State Safety Patrol then escorted her to a Columbus hospital. Doctors said the nurse probably prevented the death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Lee Sothman, and her husband, Percy."

    Joseph Percy Woolery
History of Garden County, Nebraska, 1886-1986. (written by his daughter, Muriel Reichman):

Joseph Percy Woolery was born in a sod house, on a farm nine miles west of Oshkosh, Nebraska on Jan. 5, 1898. He was the first of three children. As a boy, he helped his parents with the usual farm chores, gathering eggs, feeding and watering the livestock, bringing in corn cobs to fuel the black iron cook stove, etc. When he was older, he helped exercise and groom the work horses and his father's race horses.

His schooling was on-again, off-again, since he went to school whenever there was a teacher, and whenever he could get there. He had a total of 27 or 28 months of actual school, while he was growing up, but there must have been some lessons at home, as he was a good penman and adept at math. Percy finished the equivalent of two years of high school at the country school, that was built later. Later, he went to Scottsbluff Business College at Scottsbluff, Nebr. and when that school went broke, he attended York Business College in York, Nebr. After a serious bout with tonsillitis, his mother traveled to York to bring him home.

Percy took over his parent's farm when they moved to Oshkosh, Nebr. to send his youngest sister to high school in 1919. He purchased his first land in 1928, for $15.00 per acre. Percy was one of the few young men who had his own car. He participated in many of the activities available to young people of the times in Lisco and Oshkosh, Nebr. One of the activities was playing crack the whip on the ice on the North Platte River, just south of Lisco, Nebr. Percy drove the car with a string of young people behind him on ice skates. There were also Sunday afternoon baseball games, picnics, barn dances and, of course, the horse races in Oshkosh, Nebr.

Percy married Ruth Helen Marie Sothman on Sept. 20, 1923 at Sterling, Colo. Ruth was born on March 14, 1902 in Grand Island, Nebr. She was second of five children born to Charles Frederick William Sothman and Hertha Marie (Stender) Sothman.

Ruth completed the eighth grade in the public schools of Grand Island. She was a responsible child, helping her parents with the usual household, garden and yard chores and running errands. Ruth's father was advised by his doctor to move west to a drier climate for his health in 1915. So, in the spring of 1916, the family moved to a farm north of Lisco, Nebr. This was a traumatic change for the family. They had never lived on a farm and they were moving from a large two-story home with a full basement to a two-room house. Lisco had only a two-year high (school, so she finished high school in Bridgeport. She attended college at Kearney, Nebr. and Boulder, Colo., then taught grammar school north of Lisco in her home district (the Buske school) and one year in the Lisco Public School after her marriage.

Percy and Ruth had five children: Muriel Vernin on Jan. 3, 1925, married Stanley Reichman ; Fonda Ruth on May 15, 1927, married Roy Smid, then Rudy Gurtler; Peggy Lee on May 6, 1929 , married Paul Gardiner, then John Yilek; Karis Gail on Aug. 12, 1930, married Jay O'Dell; an d Joseph Charles on Feb. 5, 1932, married Glenna Roudebush.

Percy served as treasurer on the school board of District #64 for 19 years. He was appointed to represent the Nebraska Panhandle area for government surveys, and at times was gone from home a week at a time. Between Percy and his young son, they kept up with the farm work. He also served in the A.A.A. office for many years. It is now known as the A.S.C.S. office.

Percy enjoyed hunting ducks and geese, watching baseball games, stock car races and bowling. Ruth was active in Extension Clubs, 4-H clubs and Western Nebraska Organized Agriculture. Her hobbies are oil painting of still life, tatting, knitting, needlepoint and card playing. Ruth and Percy purchased his father's house in Oshkosh, Nebr., in 1963, and after extensive remodeling and building an addition to the house, they retired and moved into town.

Percy died on Dec. 23, 1977 and is buried in the Oshkosh Cemetery. Ruth still resides in their home at 213 W. Avenue I.

Ruth Helena Maria married Joseph "Percy" Woolery on September 20, 1923 in Sterling, Colorado. Joseph was born January 5, 1898 in Lisco, Nebraska. Joseph died December 22, 1977 in Oshkosh, Nebraska at 79 years of age.

Betty Batie was the teacher. The last two years I attended the Bridgeport High School. After graduating from High School, I attended Grand Island Business School in Grand Island, Nebraska.

On April 22, 1925, I married the "Man of my Life"--Floyd Armstong. We had one child, a son, Arthur Allen, born October 21, 1926. I was privileged to share 53 years, 8 months 18 days with the "Man of my Life".

Going over my life span has brought many memories, which I will jot down. The memories of my childhood are good. We were poor, money-wise, but we had much which money could not buy. I remember going to a movie -- the nickle (price of admission) clutched in my fist. It was hot and sweaty when I reached the "movie house".

Our maternal grandma, Lena Stender, lived with us for the duration of her life. Can you think of a single family today, having a live-in grandma or grandpa? It was Grandma who gave me sugar water when I'd have a hysterical fit --it was she who made those good soups -- served from a large tureen set in the middle of the table--(I wonder whatever became of that beautiful, big soup bowl? I'd love to have it today). I remember a statement Dad made to me, years after Grandma was gone - -"Your Granma and I never had an argument". That speaks well for both of them.

Our parents were good parents. They always did the "best they could and the best they knew how." What more can anyone do? I loved my brother and sisters, and still do. Our baby sister, Ethel, came to us when I was 10 years old. She was the joy of our hearts for the ten years she was with us.

The news we were moving to a farm was pure ecstasy--I had never lived on a farm--What fun! The ecstasy didn't last long. The endless chores --weeds--chickens--pigs--cows, etc., etc.

I learned to question my Dad's statement -- "A farmer is his own boss." A farmer, I believe, is bossed by all the above mentioned, plus more, including the whims of Nature. But there are pleasant things to remember. The beautiful, quiet morns-- the soft breeze and eventide--the trillions of stars in the heavens. How long it has been since I've seen the Milky Way! The Sears catalogue, before it reached its ultimate destination--We girls would turn page by page, choosing what we'd buy. Often hassles would ensue when two of us chose the same article. Lying on the ground on our backs, watching the beautiful cloud formations and seeing who could see the bestest and mostest figures.

Then came the teen-age years. What fun we had. A carload of us, riding over country roads, singing our hearts out-- harmonizing. We knew the tune and lyrics to every song, in spite of the fact, we had neither radio nor T.V. And then the dancing. I've danced my way around the globe. You haven't lived unless you've had a fast two-step around Stevenson's Dance Hall with Percy or a romantic waltz with Let Fry to the tune "It's Three O'Clock in the Morning--At the time, I wondered, "What more could Heaven offer?"

After you had your education, which our folks doted on, came working and job hunting. My first job was in the Garden County Attorney's office. From there to the Scottsbluff County Treasurer's office.

I'm sure I was attracted to this second job by reason of the fact the love of my life, Floyd, lived in Scottsbluff. I met Floyd during my senior year at Bridegeport High, 1921/22. We were married on April 22, 1925 in Gering, Nebraska. We had one son, Arthur Allen (Bud) who was born on October 21, 1926.

We started our married life on a twenty acre tract of ground, east of Scottsbluff. We were going to get rich on chickens. Built a large chicken house and started out with White Leghorns. But croup set in and there went the dreams of becoming rich on chickens.

From the day Floyd drew his first breath, he wanted to be an artist. But who had any thought of artists in the dirty thirties? He went to Chicago and took a course in Window Display. He attended the Dayton Art Institute. He won awards and prizes at this school. We had moved to Piqua, Ohio on this first assignment as Window Display work. From window display he moved into Catalogue work for Hobart Manufacturing Company in Troy, Ohio. He did perspective exploded drawings for the many machines manufactured by Hobart. His work warranted compliments from Hobart Dealers from England and other foreign countries. From Hobart, he went to B. F.Goodrich Co. Here he did drawings for the brake systems, used by aircraft.

In 1962, we took a trip to Oshkosh, Nebraska, to visit Dad, Ruth and family and friends. We were to have gone by plane from Denver to visit our son and daughter-in-law, Art and Lillian, who live in Los Angeles, California. But fate intervened.

While on a horseback ride, in Oshkosh, the horse Floyd was riding, reared up, fell over backward and sat down on Floyd's pelvis area. He was seriously injured. He was hospitalized in Oshkosh for nine weeks and then flown back to Troy in a private plane. We owe much to the doctors of Oshkosh. Drs. Albee and Seng and the relatives and friends who helped us thru this trying period.

In November of 1962, we decided Phoenix was the place for us to go. The mild winter would surely help Floyd regain his health. Besides, Martha and Ted were already living in Phoenix. We had visited them in 1959 and fell in love with the area and were glad to try it.

In Phoenix, with the help of the wonderful winter temperature, plus the never ending help from Ted and Martha, plus new friends, plus many doctors and many hospital stays, Floyd did regain his health and lived to enjoy sixteen years in Phoenix. It was here that he had his first real opportunity to pick up the paint brushes and start work on canvas. He was a member of the Scottsdale Artist's League and enjoyed every minute of it. He sold many of his paintings. He was very happy with his life.

I will always be thankful for the decision we made to move to Phoenix. Floyd would not have lived, had we stayed in Troy. On January 9, 1979, Floyd died of cancer. Just six weeks later, Ted died, also of cancer.

Since then Martha and I have spent much time together. We are happy to have each other. And that brings this epistle to a close. Love to all of you, far and wide.

    841. Martha Marguerite8 Sothmann (Hertha Maria "Hattie"7 Stender, Lena6 Götsch, Hans5 Gotsch , Mars4, Peter3 Götsch , Clas2 Gotsche, Peter1 Gotsch) was born June 24, 1905 in Grand Island, Nebraska. Martha died August 9, 1989 in Mesa, Arizona at 84 years of age.

Martha Marguerite married Theodore Albert Schmidt on June 4, 1929 in Lisco, Nebraska. Theodore was born February 5, 1904 in Grand Island, Nebraska. Theodore died February 21, 1979 in Scottsdale, Arizona at 75 years of age.

    MARTHA MARGUERITE SOTHMAN.
    Written by Martha Schmidt, 1984:

I was the fourth child and third daughter of Charles F. W. Sothman and Hattie Stender Sothman. I was born on June 24, 1905, in Grand Island, Nebr.

It seems to be my turn to add a bit to this story. I was given the name of Martha Marguerite in honor of my God Mother, Martha Opperman. My God Father, Hans Opperman, was the husband of Martha. Hans was a cousin of my Mother. The Oppermans could not have children and offered my parents the best farm in Iowa if they would let them adopt me. Had my folks consented and had I been adopted by the Oppermans, I could have lost all the beauty of life in the Sothman family which included Mom, Dad and my Grandma Stender, who made her home with us. There also was my brother, Leo, and my sisters, Ruth and Ida.

My brother and sisters caused me many tears by calling me "Baby". Imagine my joy when little Sister Ethel came to our household on May 16, 1913. She was a darling, angelic child. At the age of 1 1 /2 years she contracted the illness, then called Infantile Paralysis. She survived this illness and we were privileged to have her for ten years. We all felt the loss of our Angel Sister.

Our "Papa", as we called him then, was in poor health and was advised to move to a higher elevation and drier climate. The folks bought a farm north of Lisco from Christ Jensen. This was in 1916. The home in Grand Island was sold and our belongings, along with two horses, Dick and Dash, were loaded into a boxcar and the move was made. Papa rode in the boxcar and the rest of us went "out west" by train. On that same train were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ray, who were on their honeymoon and on their way to Lisco to establish the drug store. Mrs. Ray was the pharmacist. She was to be of such help to us in the years to come as we did not have a doctor any closer than Oshkosh.

It must have broken my Mother's heart to leave that lovely home in Grand Island--a home with a full basement, two stories, eight rooms and full attic-- and move to a two room sod house which was to house three adults and five children. It was wall to wall people. But she lived thru it like a trooper. It was all fun and games for us kids. We thought it great fun . We could always go outside and roll down the hill in a barrel or go to the grainry and try standing on our heads in the wheat.

The move was traumatic for Grandma, too. She was a great lady. While living in Grand Island, I was her bed partner and she taught me many German songs, prayers and verses. What a loss for us when she died on April 13, 1917.

My first school in Lisco was the one room stone building, known to us as the Buske School. On Ida's and my first attempt to go to school alone, we were told by Dad--(He had graduated to Dad. The first time I used that term, I felt very disrespectful) to go as far as the broken sod and then turn north. Being A-1 green horns, what did we know of broken sod? Instead of ever turning north, we went east--thru the fence and over sand hill after sand hill, knowing full well we were on the wrong path but kept on until we heard an animal barking. We knew for sure it was a coyote, so turned heel and retraced our steps. Got home at noon. Must have been on the trail for at least four hours. And the coyote we heard, we learned later, was the dog on the Charlie Buske farm.

I enjoy recalling the neighbors we had while living on the farm. There were the Barnwells, the Buskes--Charlie, August,-- the Lee Beerups, the Weatherwaxs, the Schlickers --Herman, John, and Henry, George Rose, Mrs. Dickman, Mr. Neil and many more. After graduating from the eighth grade, out of the old Buske School, I attended one year of High School in Lisco. In that the Lisco High was not an accredited school, I transferred to Bridgeport for my 10th grade and took the 11th and 12th grades in Gering. The normal training classes, which I took in my 11th and 12th grades, allowed me to teach upon graduating from High School.

After four years of teaching, Theodore (Ted) Schmidt and I were married. Ted was the son of Louis and Minnie Schmidt of Anselmo, Nebr. We lived on a rented farm out of Anselmo for the next four or five years. We then moved to Lisco to the folk's farm, to help them, since the death of brother Leo, left them alone. Ted thought it our duty to help them. We lived here about two years. We finally ended up in DeSota, Kansas.

In the intervening years, Ted had worked building containment camps and munitions plants--all necessary during the World War II years. We settled in DeSoto where Ted was in the business of construction. He built ten houses in DeSoto. Our two children - Sally and T. Charles - were educated in the DeSoto Schools thru High School. Charles graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in civil engineering. Sally attended Secretarial School in Kansas City.

About 1952, arthritis paid me a visit and has stayed with me ever since. About 1958, my arthritis was very severe and out of the clear blue sky, one day, Ted said "We are moving to Phoenix". After living in Phoenix for about six months, we purchased a mobile home, set it up at 1048 N. 48th Street and have been here ever since.

My Ted died on February 23, 1979, due to cancer. He has been missed very much but I still have much to be thankful for--my two children and their spouses, my eight grand children and I am very proud and happy with my three great-grand daughters. My daughter Sally had five children and my son, Charles, had three. To all of you who have been a part of my life--I ask God's Blessings to be upon you. Martha, Schmidt, September 1984
