The following are excerpts of a taped conversation with Amanda Gottsch Winterburn on October 12, 1979. Amanda was 93 years of age. Asking her the questions were her daughter, LaFola Seltz, and niece LeMara Eicke and Lois Gottsch.
She remembers the Grandmothers, Bertha and Wilhelmina, and you said they lived together in a little house your dad had built.
Yes, dad had built the house.
But, you're pretty sure that your Grandpa Claus didn't live on the place then?
I don't know even when he died.
He died about 1879 because that was the date on the stone at the German cemetery. I found his obituary in the county paper, the Blair papers, a old paper, and they said he lived in Ft. Calhoun, and I found some real estate up there that he had, do you suppose they could have lived up there then?
I suppose. I don't remember, I don't remember them saying where dad first lived, you see they came across the river on a flat boat with their belongings.
Well, they live at Davenport, Iowa for a while didn't they?
Yes, and then came to Nebraska. Papa was 6 years when he came to Nebraska. (Charles Frederick Gottsch was 6 years old when he came to America and 11 years old when he came to Nebraska.)
According to the deed, he was born in Denmark, was he just a baby when they come over then?
He was six when he crossed the Missouri River.
I bet they weren't in Davenport very long then. Do you remember your Aunt Elizabeth then Jipp?
Oh, yes.
She is younger than your dad?
Yes, she was younger then my dad.
Was she born in Denmark too?
I don't know.
You don't remember hearing that. What was her husband's name?
Fred, they lived around Ft. Calhoun.
There still are some Jipps up there.
Yes, that's her grandchildren.
There was a son Fred.
The young boy was Fred, and Henry, Lottie and Jessie. Lottie married a Hatcher and Jessie married Bill Hendrickson.
Well, do you know where they are buried then? Are they in Ft. Calhoun?
Jessie lived in Kansas the last time I heard from her and Lottie and her husband are both dead.
Ya, but what about their folks, I mean? Aunt Lizzy, I mean.
Aunt Lizzy, ya, they must be buried in Ft. Calhoun, the whole family.
Ah, I don't remember if it was dad or Aunty Mae, that was telling me that once in a while you went on a trip to Germany with your mother.
Yes.
Where did you go?
We stayed with Mommy's sister.
Oh, her sister! Do you remember her first name?
Margaret. The other sister, she died just two months before we went over. She died in April and we left Bennington in June. So then Mama brought her home with us, Margaret Koch was her name.
Now did she have a husband?
No, he was dead.
Oh, so he was dead before you came over. Do you remember the name of the sister that died? What her name was?
Her name was Lottie. Yes, Lottie Stender
Do you have any idea what year it was when you went back over to Germany?
I was ten years old.
She was ten years old, that was 83 years ago.
Ten years old. You remember that pretty well.
I remember that like it was yesterday.
Now you did go across the ocean by boat?
Yes.
But how did you get from Bennington to the boat?
By the train.
Then you took off from, I suppose, New York?
Yes.
What area in Germany did you go to?
Oh, we went to Hamburg, we went to Pratzs, Franksburg. We didn't get to Berlin, our time ran out.
But the town that your family was in?
A sister in Franksburg, and a brother-in-law in Pratzs and a cousin, no, no, a cousin in ah, I can't remember. Mama's sister, the one we brought over with us. Margaret, she was from Franksburg and Aunt Lottie was from Pratzs, P r a t z s, that's how you spell it, and I can't remember where Mama's cousin was from, maybe it will come to me.
What did you do with Margaret when you got here, did she live with you?
No, she ran a millenery shop and she got organized and settled in Bennington. After, I guess she stayed at Mama's, at home for a month or two. It took a while to get aquainted and organized.
Then did she remarry?
No, no, she was a widow.
Do you remember when you went down to your Grandma's house, did they talk German to you or English?
Ya, they always talked German.
Did they understand English?
Sure they could.
Could they write English?
That I don't remember.
Did your dad to to school here then or your Uncle Pete?
He must have.
You don't remember them saying they ever went to school?
No. See the Schneiders, east of the home place, they're Papa's half brothers.
Ya, we figured that out. I talked to a lady who sent me a whole bunch of information, her name is Splitgerber, she is related to the Paulsen's, who is from the Schneiders, it was Henry Schneider's family. She knew all about the Henry Schneiders, but didn't know much about the brother, Hans, but he was married and had children too, didn't he?
Yes, Yes. He lived in Bennington, but he might have lived the first couple of years over there.
During the cyclone, did you lose a lot of things?
Otto did.
I suppose they lost a lot of personal things.
Oh ya, the whole place they lost everything. Some of his papers, they sent back from Iowa.
From Iowa. My goodness, strange how that will carry like that. Dad said he remembers that after the storm, they went over, of course, and he remembers running up the roof of the barn that was laying on the ground.
Yes, Yes.
He thought that was big fun on that big old steep roof. But he was pretty little so he really didn't notice the catastrophe of it all.
That was 1913 then.
Yes.
That must have been a big storm.
It was, those that it hit, it took everything.
You don't by any chance have kept any news clippings? I can't seem to find my Grandma Maggie's obituary in a paper anywhere. Would it have been printed, do you remember?
I don't know.
Dad couldn't remember, what his mother died from, but he was pretty young and all he could remember was that she was sick for a while and then they took her to Omaha on the train to the hospital and she died shortly after in there.
She died that night from blood poisoning.
Oh, blood poisoning, what from, do you know?
A miscarriage.
Aunt Mandy, one time you told me about the gypsies that had come to the door.
Oh, yes, they had come up to the house where Otto lives now, the folks lived there. I remember the gypies. They'd come to the house and beg and steal everything they could pick up.
Ya, but we mean the curse they put on Charlie's mother, Adele.
Oh, yes, that was in Bennington. That was Henry and Hans Hansen, Lena's husband, they run the saloon. And the two girls and their hired girl, had the hotel.
That's where the city bar, county bar, it's right across the street from the dance hall. Unless its gone. That's what they run and it was the gypies. They were getting ready for a big dance, you know. Oft's it wasn't there at the time, but there was a dance hall that went from east to west and Oft's had a saloon on the other street. And the gypies come to town, they went from door to door. And they came to the back door at Della and Lena's. And Della stood washing dishes and lena was cleaning up the house. It was early in the morning. And Della was expecting and that gypsy asked her to give her a roast of meat. And Della said no. And the gypsy, she turned around and put a curse on Della. She said "I hope to God you die when you have that baby", and she did.
Do you remember your mother's birthday and when she died?
I sure do.
All they list on the tombstone is the year and thats kind of important. When was she born?
December 27.
And when did she die?
She died January 30, 1921. She'd been sick for a long time.
The year she was born was 1844. Well, I have the death certificate for your father and on it they contribute death to a fall he had down the basement steps, quite a time prior to his death and it injured his kidneys.
It's strange though, that we found your dad and his brother, Peter, were married on the same day.
Yes.
I noticed they died the same year, but not the same time.
You can ask Art, he knows more about the Oklahoma people than I do.
Why did they go to Oklahoma, just because it was a new land, or do you know?
No, there was a drive, a drive for land. They homesteaded, I think.
And they took all the children but the two that married the Schneiders then.
Yes.
Did you get together a lot when everyone was growing up for parties and birthdays?
No, Uncle Pete's didn't believe in it. Aunt Sally, she didn't believe in birthday parties.
Could Claus and Bertha write or read or speak English?
No, they didn't speak much English, but I don't think she could write much English. Cause I never did see then, (Grandmas) with a newspaper.
Now someone told me that your dad could talk or understand Danish also, either one, German or Danish.
Yes, either one. But late, after he didn't hear or talk it, he kind of forgot. And he would speak English and German. I can't talk German, but I've lost it too.
Oh, your were able to when you were little?
Sure, I always talked German.
Did your dad and mother talk predominatley German in the home?
Yes.
Did they allow you to answer in German?
We could answer any way.
Dad said that it was your dad that built the farm place where he lived, where Henry and Maggie lived, is that right?
Yes, he built that place. You see, when Otto got married he was going to move on the home place, and he went to Blair, Papa did, and bought that Wardell place, and he and my brother, Fred, built the place up. Then they moved up there, Otto was married 26 of March and Maggie and Henry, they lived where Otto lives now. Maggie and Henry lived there and Papa bought that place and they moved on the 28th.
Then where were your parents living? Were they in that little house?
In that place down below.
Was that place always there? Did they build that?
They built that. It was right on the county line.
Where did you go to grade school, Aunt Amanda?
The first couple years, I went to Grau school, close to Bennington, right north. Then we could transfer to the nearest school, and then Papa transfered us to Washington.
How did you get back and forth?
WALKED! We walked.
Didn't you stay with Aunt Lena Hansen when she lived in Washington?
Then when Maggie got out of school, they stayed with Lena and her husband Hans Hansen, built up a saloon in Washington. Then I stayed with Lena. And we left home a good many times when the half past eight o'clock bell rang, and I'll tell you we walked! We had just so much chores to do before we went and it was there waiting when we came home at night. We didn't have time or a chance to raise hell like the kids do now days. We had our work to do.
What kind of chores did you do?
Well then everything was wood stoves and corn cobs. When I went to Grau school, Maggie, Otto and I we had to walk 2 1/2 miles, back and forth, and we felt pretty good.
How many years then did you go to school, through the eighth grade?
Yes, through the eighth grade.
None of the boys ever went on to another school, like high school?
No they never, just through the 8th grade, excepting Otto.
Did Peter come to see his mother?
Oh, yes, he come see her but that was way up in the trees.
And he never stopped at your house? Did Peter and your dad get along good then?
Oh, yes. But they didn't look any more like brothers. Uncle Pete had a great big fuzzy beard. And Papa just had a moustache.
How tall was your dad? Was he a tall man or short?
About medium size.
We heard of these stories. One was about a new minister who came to town, I don't know if it was Bennington or Washington. And the fellows in town were at the saloon and decided to tease the minister and make him dance. Then the hero came on the scene, your dad, and took the side of the minister and made the fellows do the dancing. Does that sound like something your dad would do?
Ya, that sounds like one of dad's tricks alright.
You know the picture of him with the gun, I think he must have made one for each one of his children.
That picture was taken every Sunday morning, he would go to a shooten match, Papa and I would help him fill his shells. His gun shot shells. Every Sunday.
Where were these shooting things?
They had a regular bunch that went near every Sunday morning.
Were they at Bennington?
Yes. And he got to be the best shot. He hit the bullseye oftener. And that's where he got that gun.
The gun was a prize?
The gun was the prize. and that was some gun! It was hand carved.
Where is it at?
I don't know.
It was at Glen's and then he gave it to Uncle Otto since he was the only son left. And it stayed on the farm. There was a gun, they called it the something buss.
Blunderbuss.
Blunderbuss, that your dad had, and it went to, oh, who does Bill belong too?
Uncle Fred. And it went to Bill.
Oh, that's who I thought got the other gun.
Your dad seemed to spend a lot of time with his grandchrildren, did he like the kids?
Oh, yes, he was very fond of them.
Because my dad has very fond memories of spending time with his Grandpa and Grandma. He remembers how your mother cut her bread up in her arms. It's interesting that your dad was a very good carpenter, well he must have taught my dad, because my dad does beautiful work with wood.
See, Fred, he took up carpentery as his lifes work.
He never farmed then. And my dad would tell how your dad would cut wood, and cut it and pile it and how he would pile it, in a round ring.
Yes, piled high and in a round stack.
There wasn't any question about it, he showed the hired man, and that's the way to do it.
That's the way you'd pile his wood.
Dad said you'd cut the wood in the winter after the harvest, let that sit for a year and then you'd take that in and put it in the wood shed so it would stay dry.
That's what we always did.
On that gun thing, I wanted to ask one more thing, when your dad was about 40, did he go to a championship shoot to Chicago or someplace?
I don't remember.
Otto was telling me about something and he thought he had gone to some championship thing and that's where that picture and the gun came about. He went on a train.
He might have, but I don't remember hearing about it.
Art was telling something about it and it seemed like a long ways away.
Did your dad do a lot of hunting then?
Oh, yes.
And what did they hunt for?
Anything.
And then you'd eat the meat?
Yes, at a dance. And then Mrs. Steadmen would cook the game. Her husband run the saloon as you came into Bennington.
Did your dad and mom like to dance then?
Oh did they!
You know, we never called them Grandma and Grandpa. We always had to call them Mama and Papa Gottsch.
Everyone in the community who ever talked to him or about him always called him Papa Gottsch.
Do you know that farm was put into a corporation so that it will never get away from the Gottschs. And its under the name of "Papa Gottsch, Corp."

316. Claus Henry7 Jipp (Louisa Sophie Margrethe6 Göttsch, Claus5 Gotsch, Hinrich4, Johan3 Götsch, Peter2 Gotsch, Peter1) was born October 26, 1868 in Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska. Claus died October 9, 1926 in Dannebrog, Nebraska at 57 years of age. His body was interred October 1926 Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska, Fort Calhoun Cemetery.
Claus married Carrie Grenelle on July 2, 1893 in Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska. Carrie was born October 19, 1869 in Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska. Carrie died June 4, 1909 in Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska, at 39 years of age.
Fort Calhoun, Nebraska Paper October 1926
This entire community was shocked when word was received here at noon last Saturday that Henry Jipp had died at the home of his son, Edwin T. Jipp, Dannebrog, Nebr. Mr. Jipp has gone to Dannebrog just a week before to visit with his on and family and to to enjoy a little hunting trip in that vicinity. He complained of not feeling well a day or two after his arrival there, but he thot (sic) it was nothing serious until Friday when a doctor was summoned, and arrangements were made to take him to Grand Island for treatment Saturday morning, but he suddenly passed away shortly after being placed in the ambulance. His death was due to intestinal trouble.
Mr. Jipp was born in Ft. Calhoun, Oct. 26, 1868, and had resided here his entire life. Probably no man enjoyed a wider acqusintance (sic) in this community than did Mr. Jipp. He had been identified with various community affairs and organizations during most of his adult years, having served as a county supervisor, member of the school board several terms, and official of the cemetery association, clerk of the local W.O.W. lodge for many years, and was leader of the band here until it disbanded a few years ago. He was one of the oldest rural route carriers, in point of service, in this state, having completed twenty-five years continuous service on route 1 from the Ft. Calhoun post office Feb. 1 this year, and was holding the position at the time of his death. He was faithful and efficient in his duties, devoted to his family, and he will indeed be missed by them and by the whole community.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Louis Jipp, his seven children, Carl, Elizabeth, Jean, Edwin, Dorothy, Margaret and Louis, and three sisters, Emma, Charlotta Katherine and Jessie, and one brother, Carl Frederick. He was married July 2, 1893 to Carrie Grenelle, who preceded him in death several years ago.
One of the largest audience that ever attended a funeral service in Ft. Calhoun was present at the obsequies, which were held at the Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon, the church being unable to accommodate many more than half the attendants. Rev. Baltzly, pastor of the Kountze Memorial church, preached the sermon. The floral tributes were a mass of beauty and fragrance. A long procession of autos followed the remains to their final earthly resting place in the Ft. Calhoun cemetery.
Claus Henry Jipp and Carrie Grenelle had the following children:

Karl Freidrich Wilhelm ("Charles") & Hertha Maria Stender Sothmann
History of Garden County, Nebraska 1886-1986, written by granddaughter, Muriel V. Reichman:
Karl Frederick Wilhelm Sothmann (Charles "Charlie" Frederick William Sothman) was born Nov. 10, 1874 in Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana. He was the first of seven children born to Claus Frederick Sothmann and Louisa Caroline Sengbusch Sothmann. The family moved to Michigan City, Ind. in 1880 and then to Cairo, Nebr. in 1885, where his father took a homestead. They later moved to Grand Island, Nebraska. Charlie, as he was affectionately known to his family and friends, helped his father on the farm at Cairo.
In Grand Island, he was employed at the sugar beet factory, then at a brewery, and finally with the Union Pacific Railroad. He married Hertha Marie "Hattie" Stender on May 30, 1900.
Hattie was born June 3, 1877. She was the second of two children born to Heinrich Stender and Helene "Lena" Goetsch Stender, in Traer, Tama County, Iowa. She and her family moved to Alda, Nebr. in 1884 and later to Grand Island, Nebr. Hattie became a talented dressmaker after a few years in Grand Island.
Charlie and Hattie lived with her mother for several years after their marriage. In 1911, they razed the Stender home and built a new, eight-room, two-story home with a full basement. Their growing family enjoyed the added space. Charlie and Hattie had five children: Leo Claudius on Mar. 2, 1901; Ruth Helen Marie on Mar. 14, 1902, married Percy Woolery; Ida Emma on Oct. 30, 1903, married Floyd Armstrong; Martha Marguerite on June 24, 1905, married Ted Schmidt; and Ethel Ellen on May 16, 1913. Ethel had infantile paralysis (polio) at the age of eighteen months and was, thereafter, a semi-invalid.
Charlie was in poor health for several years. In 1915, Charlie's doctor suggested that he move to a higher elevation and drier climate. Having friends that had previously moved to Lisco, Nebr., he chose that area and purchased the Christ Jensen farm northeast of Lisco. The family and mother-in-law moved on Mar. 31, 1916.
As was the practice of the day, Charlie rode in an immigrant train car with the household goods, horses and chickens. The rest of the family rode in the passenger coach to Lisco. The family, three adults and five children, moved into a two-room sod house.
Leo and Ruth had finished the eighth grade before leaving Grand Island. Ida and Martha attended school in the "Buske" school, a one-room country school, located about two miles north of their home. Lisco had only a two-year high school, located in a room above the Lisco State Bank. Ruth, Ida and Martha continued their education there and finished high school in Bridgeport and Gering, Nebr.
The village of Lisco had few stores during those early years, so catalogs were widely used. Many things could be purchased from catalogs, such as clothing, kitchen utensils, furniture, machinery, etc. Charlie ordered a green wagon with red wheels, that came ready to be assembled.
Catalogs served many other purposes: they made temporary high-chairs, hot pads for kettles, paper dolls and clothing, paper airplanes and were the proverbial 'wish book.' Ultimately, they reached their final destination - the little house behind the house.
During grain threshing time, some of the threshing crew (neighbors) would come early enough to eat breakfast as well as the usual dinner and supper at the Sothman farm. 'Ma' Sothman was known as a good cook. Grandma Lena Stender died Apr. 13, 1917 at age 80. Little Ethel was never able to attend public school, and died on Sept. 14, 1923. Leo died suddenly at the family farm on July 23, 1932. All were buried in the family plot in Grand Island, Nebr.
About 1934, Charlie and Hattie built a new home next to the sod house. Martha and Ted Schmidt came to live in the new house, and help Charlie with the farming. An addition was also built onto the sod house, at this time, making it about twice as large as it had been.
Charlie and Hattie retired and moved into Oshkosh, Nebr. in 1948. Charlie raised a huge garden there and Hattie canned many quarts of the garden produce. Hattie enjoyed crocheting, sewing and cooking. Charlie enjoyed reading the newspaper and discussing current events. He listened to baseball games, and later watched them on T.V., although never saw an actual game. Both enjoyed visiting with their friends, and attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
Hattie passed away on Sept. 30, 1961 and Charlie on June 17, 1962. Both are buried in the family plot in Grand Island.
